End of Life Care—Humane Euthanization

End of Life Care—Humane Euthanization

End of life care appointments are a three-step process, involving an initial injectable medication to sedate your little one.  Once sleeping soundly (usually in 10-20 minutes), we will place a temporary IV.  Once we have IV access, we will give a medication called Propofol (medication to induce general anesthesia) followed by Pentobarbital (an overdose of general anesthesia that allows your little one to transition).  These two IV medications work quickly, within seconds. Once your little one has transitioned and you have had time to say good-bye, we will take your little one with us for aftercare. We will deliver your little one immediately to the aftercare facility where his or her remains will undergo aquamation (environmentally friendly, liquid cremation).  If you wish to have your little one’s ashes returned, Dr. April will personally bring your little one’s ashes back to you in a cedar urn with a keepsake paw print when ready.  We are usually able to bring patients home within 2 weeks.  You also have the option of general cremation, in which no ashes would be returned.
